Not-So-Wordless Wednesday

Popeye Village, Anchor Bay, Malta

This is my quite-not-so-Wordless Wednesday:). Sweethaven, more commonly known as Popeye Village, is situated in Anchor Bay, Malta. The village is named after Popeye for this is where the 1980 movie version (starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duval) of the cartoon was filmed. I find the choice of film location appropriate for Popeye is a sailor (with an anchor tattoo on his arm) and this bay is where old anchors were left, hence, the name of the bay. The film set was later turned into a theme park. Even if you’re not a fan of amusement parks, you would still enjoy your visit due to the picturesque appearance of the village with its wooden houses and their shingled roof and, of course, the crystal clear water that invites you to take a dip and enjoy the cool water on your sun-kissed skin.

In summer, boat rides are available so you can enjoy the view from the sea and visit other nearby coasts/beaches. Too bad, we went there during the winter season, so we missed this opportunity. But still, it was a memorable visit --- we had a good dose of sunshine, not many tourists (in fact, we almost had the entire park to ourselves), plus this magnificent vista of the hypnotizing sea, the rugged limestone cliffs and the straight-from-the-cartoon hamlets.

Since today, March 5, is the feast day of St. Olive, let me finish this entry by singing “He's strong to the finich cause he eats his spinach, he's Popeye the sailor man. Toooot toooot!”

What a beautiful place to be. I think I would have preferred going when there were no tourists as you did. The quietness must have made it that much better. Beautiful!

Beautiful shot. It's as if I could feel the warmth and the smell the sea breeze already.

hi there suzy... thank you for dropping by and i'm glad you don't mind me writing something about my photo (when it's supposed to be "wordless")... and yes, it's a nice place to visit:)

hello pinay mommy... the place really looks like something out of a painting gallery... especially the clear, blue sea and the rocky cliff:)

katarina, thanks for dropping by... it's not that cold in malta, even during the winter season... so in countries where winter can be really chilly (especially in sweden), malta is a good place to visit to have some sun:)
